At the southern end of the FM Area Diversion project, where the P3 developer’s work connects to the federal work, another significant milestone has been met. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ contractor HSG Park Joint Venture finished their work at the intersection of County Road 16 and County Road 17, and it is now open to traffic in the east, west and southbound directions. In addition, ASN Constructors has finished the construction of the County Road 16/17 crossing over the stormwater diversion channel portion of the project. Both the intersection and crossing are now open to traffic.
These openings mean detours and road-closed signs are a welcome thing of the past for motorists who use these roads on a regular basis.
“This marks another win for the project,” said Jason Benson, Metro Flood Diversion Authority executive director. “It’s not just an achievement in opening another bridge and road to traffic but it marks the collaborative efforts of the first-ever public-private partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”
The project included constructing a roundabout intersection, T intersection and an embankment. These features consisted of about 6,000 cubic yards of reinforced concrete, 30,000 cubic yards of asphalt pavement and 680 feet of culverts. Landscaping, embankment and other additional permanent features will be completed in the spring of 2026.
The bridge measures 410 feet in length and includes 18 girders, each measuring 136 feet long. Motorists will see a gravel approach on each end of the bridge, which will be paved with asphalt in the spring of 2026 to fully complete the crossing and will involve closures. The crossing features a pedestrian and bike path that will also be completed in the spring. Work on the crossing was completed by ASN Constructors and subcontractor Industrial Builders, Inc.
